About Idea Cellular

Founded and The Beginning

Idea Cellular is a cell phone company that is operational in many different states in India. Initially, Idea Cellular was first founded in 1995 as a result of a joint venture between Tata, Aditya Birla Group, and AT&T.  They operated in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (UP) West, and Rajasthan. At the beginning, Tata, Aditya Birla Group, and AT&T each owned one third equity in the company. However, in 2004, AT&T joined with Cingular, therefore, they decided to sell their stake in Idea, which was 32.9%. Their stake was then equally bought by Tata and Aditya Birla Group at 16.45% each. When Tata created their own mobile services, Tata Indicom, differences were sparked between Tata and Birla. Because of all the complications that were formed as a result of Tata holding shares for two mobile companies, Birla bought Tatas shares in 2006.

Today

Today, The Aditya Birla Group own 49.1% of Idea Cellular.Idea Cellular is currently a leading GSM mobile service operator. It has  pan India licenses, and a customer base of over 44 million. Idea cellular is active in 17 service areas, and operations are soon expected to start in Chennai Metro; Kolkata & West Bengal, North East & Assam, and J&K.
