General Information
Aircel is a cellular phone service provider located in India that offers mobile phone coverage that can either be prepaid or postpaid GSM. To this day, the company has a total of 17 circles. These circles include Chennai, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, North East India, Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Kolkata, Kerala, Mumbai, Delhi, UP(West), UP(East), and Karnataka.
Founded
Aircel was founded in 1999 by C. Sivasankaran, a NRI businessman. In addition, Aircel is a joint venture between Maxis Communications Berhad of Malaysia (74%), and Apollo Hospital Enterprise Ltd of India (26%).
Competition
Aircel is the seventh largest GSM cellular phone service provider in India, with over 18 million subscribers. Its competitors include, Reliance Communication, Airtel, Vodafone Essar, BSNL, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, and Mts India.
Future
By the end of the year 2009, Aircel hopes to fulfill a plan to become a pan-India national operator.
